Grace and I had a morning with the McCreas in late May. After checking out the tree houses, Genevieve got down to some painting...

We read that the Olympic flame was to begin its journey to Athens from the Opera House, so we boarded a ferry at 7:00am as the sun was rising, and got to the Opera House in time to see the crowds gathering.

The crowds sure gathered and only Grace, on my shoulders, was able to see the Greek/Aboriginal dance that culminated in the appearance of Cathy Freeman who won the 400m in Sydney in 2000. Cathy carried the flame on its first leg up the east side of Circular Quay.

The high point of Grace's band experience was the performance in the Yamaha Band Competition at the Willoughby town hall. There were more than 30 bands in their level, but Neutral Bay came away with a gold medal.

Peter Fitzsimons, whose son Louis sits next to Grace at school, is an old mate of mine from Wesley. He invited Pip, Margot, Chris and I to join him at a formal dinner there where he was to speak. We roamed the corridors of Purser and Callaghan, relived moments of loud triumph and quiet desperation nearly a quarter of a century ago, and ended up in a wine bar on King St. Memorable evening.
