Thanksgiving in New York City : What a great time we had. It was Grace's first time in New York City, so we took in all the sites -- United Nations, Times Square, 3 Broadway shows, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island. I also did lots of synths of the places we went. You can see them all here: http://photosynth.net/Search.aspx?query=nycthx2008.

Diamond Peak Trip : It was supposed to be a trip up the Sahale Arm, but bad weather blew into Washington and resourceful Captain Gaylord suggested a plane ride to sunnier climes (and climbs). The result was a spectacular weekend around Diamond Peak in central Oregon, about an hour south of Bend. On Saturday afternoon we climbed the mountain then camped on a secluded and crystal-clear lake. We swam in the morning, then topped it off with a trip down the nearby lava tubes. Back home in Seattle by 8pm courtesy of Gaylord airlines. It’s going to be hard to top this one.

To the Brothers : Two years ago in May I climbed the Brothers in cloudy conditions, and vowed to do it again in the hopes of getting a view. This time we got snow! It started well on Saturday: a beautiful approach hike past Lena Lake and the Valley of the Silent Men, steaks on a stick, fine "Down East" stories from Peter, and a good deal of cheap wine. We awoke on Sunday to rain that turned to snow about 1,000 feet above our campsite. There was still a lot of mountain to climb. The weather was pretty atrocious at the top, so we didn't stick around long on the summit ridge. Long glissades down the snow fields were followed by a soggy six mile tramp out to the car. Altogether a wonderful weekend. Thank you Peter, Kevin, and Chris.

The first day was a pleasant hike to Lower Lena Lake for lunch, then on through the sublime Valley of the Silent Men to our campsite. The next day was long (13 hours) up from the camp, up at least 1500 feet of snow gullies, and topping out directly behind the South Brother summit. We were about 200' from the summit, but the wind and clouds convinced us that this was a good enough summit for us. Beautiful view of the traverse to the North Brother in the last shot. Seattle Snow Day : We had an inch or two of snow one night in early January. The house and the lake sparkled under gray skies. Grace made a snow man in the front yard in the afternoon. By sundown the snow had gone.

January Days at Stevens : There was little snow in the Cascades in early January, but the weather was beautiful for four days, so I called up a couple of friends with flexible schedules and made two snowshoe daytrips to Stevens Pass.

On Monday, Alex, Avery and I went for a hike on the Skyline Lake trail. The thermometer on the car showed 16 degrees at 10:15am, and there was a slight breeze and fog. Avery (among others) was cold! We warmed up as we made quick progress up the hill to the north of the ski resort, and initially missed the lake going all the way to the top of a fairly steep hill. Lunch on the lake, then a quick jog downhill. We were back at the car by 1:00pm. A very fun day.

On Wednesday, my mate Peter accompanied Avery and I back to the scene of the crime, and we made Goldsworthy-ian snow-throws on the lake, then lunched on a very pointy little peak. Another fabulous day.

Montara Christmas : We spent a wonderful week in Montara over Christmas 2004. We drove down (bringing Avery) and stayed at the next door neighbors. The weather was beautiful, and we went to the "Jumpy House" and the beach several times. After Christmas Eve and Christmas Day chez Liz, we all met up at the SF MOMA on New Years Day.
